Hi guys,

I've got my script hosted with Goscomb.net at the moment but just wondering which is the best hosting company for a VPS for my script please?

Regards,

Gordon

A good location is the rack above nominets dac servers and plug yours straight in the back :)
Goscomb are a good location, they are peered with Nom and only about 3ms away. What's the problem?

Thanks Stender, I used to have the rack above the DAC server but had to move due to drawing too many amps :)

Nothing wrong with them really, just making sure I'm as close as possible.

Luck and strategy are two of the biggest factors imho. I have hosted very close to nom, been on goscombe, mythic beasts and others and had so so joy. I hosted on a crappy server in my mates garage on his adsl and caught LLL co uks and some vgood names so figure that one out.

The proof is in the pudding. HAve you caught any competitive names where you are? You know what names are going to be competitive so if you get one of them your doing ok.

Thanks for the info Stender.

I think I caught a semi-competitive one once, no LLL sadly even though I keep trying :) My logs show that I always try for them but they never seem to end up with my tag, even after I've trimmed all the fat off the reg string.

oh well, I'll try a little longer then I'm going to focus on things that make me more money.

Luck and strategy certainly seem to be big factors. Find it amazing when I beat some of the other catchers on the sought after names (every now and then it happens - I think!) but then realise I probably just got my tactics right and had a lot of luck that day!

To be honest most catchers will have similar scripts and probably done the same things on their scripts and all probably using the same handful of hosts. Theres a few things you can do to improve your chances but the fact that theres a fair spread of catchers on any premium domains shows that some luck is involved.

Running a cable direct into Nominet's backbone network seems to be the only way to improve, perhaps Nominet might want to offer some colo space to us if we ask nicely :)

You could always get a job as a cleaner and whilst hoovering the techies desks stick a keylogger in the back of the pc's or lower yourself out of the air con whilst he's logging into the server and drop some eye drops in his tea.

Looks like a cunning plan to me!

Just need to get a screen capture system in place with the right developer and ensure that they view to the drop time algorithm and we're in business :)

When you guys traceroute nominet, what kind of result are you getting?

I was just googling and saw this, is it good or bad?:

# tcptraceroute epp.nominet.org.uk
Selected device eth0, address 93.93.128.7, port 42518 for outgoing packets
Tracing the path to epp.nominet.org.uk (213.248.201.183) on TCP port 80 (www), 30 hops max
1 gw0-sov.mythic-beasts.com (93.93.128.1) 0.323 ms 0.200 ms 0.206 ms
2 fe1-3-nom-col1.nominet.org.uk (193.203.5.52) 0.532 ms 0.565 ms 0.578 ms
3 host-213-248-206-10.nominet.org.uk (213.248.206.10) 0.666 ms 0.576 ms 0.727 ms
4 host-213-248-206-1.nominet.org.uk (213.248.206.1) 3.169 ms 3.351 ms 3.233 ms
5 * * *

Does it even matter about these couple of ms? How likely is it to make a difference?

The alternative of course is to get everyone with a tag to catch for you and take half the profits.....oh wait ;) Anyway just so you know I'm getting less than 2ms from nominet and I suspect people have got even better than that. The real trick is getting your purchasing request to run as fast as possible. 1ms doesn't matter if your script can issue a buy command 2ms before anyone else.

So there is more weight on the script, then surely if you could write one in assembly it would be the best?

However I believe most are in C++ or PHP?

Forget php. ;)
Look at low level.

Ok so typically assembly or machine code then, interesting :)

Well I suppose I should have said 'lower' language.
Best bet is to run speed tests on functions that you're going to be using in different languages.
