I'm trying to get a list of benefits of a good generic name. Below is what I have so far, would appreciate your input!

- Easily remembered
- Quickly let's customers associate your company with what you do
- Short generics are less prone to typographical errors
- Can aid in better PPC CTR's - as per Edwin's test
- Can aid in better SEO rankings (does anyone have any actual proof of this? Links to blogs etc?)
- Puts you in the same league as other larger companies (B&Q - diy.com, British Gas - house.co.uk, etc...)

Anything else obvious I've missed?

I am sure my clients won't mind me promoting their niche use of a generic Khalid!

Tandems: www.tandems.co.uk
Bought to promote their niche cycle business:
- Depending on where you are searching from, it is generally No.1 in G
- Gives them ultimate credibility in their market
- Looks sexy as hell on marketing materials, show stands etc
- Has helped them carve a position in the marketplace and differenciate themselves from their competitors
- They get 90% of the average monthly estimated exact searches visiting their site (G keyword tool result / actual unique visitors)

Any prove of this, it's a strong claim, even being no 1 doesn't give you 90%

Web users could easily click on eg, PR3 or PR5 or even PR28

Some input please

It's not a claim that being P1 gives 90% of the traffic, just that if there were 100 predicted exact searches for the word "Tandems" they get 90 of those. But this doesn't take into account direct type-ins etc.

Hope that helps.

The buyer will instantly have made a long term investment! :D Not money down the drain on Advertising on TV, radio, National News papers etc.

Having that generic and doing a load of Press Realeses would be advertising anyways too!

Cheers guys - much appreciated too Johnny.

I will add in about the asset maintaining it's value as I think that's worth mentioning.

Does anyone have any links to actual proof that a generic ranks better?

How can a Generic NOT rank better, is a better question ?

BobsManchester.co.uk
ChildrensToys.co.uk

Which will do better when looking for kids toys / childrens toys / toy shops ?

A generic relating exactly can't not do better, if you have buckets of cash then SEO Bobs to Toys but going to be a slog.

You want these ideas for selling domains, right?

I know what you mean, but I think you could say it better if you put it differently, eg.

"Major companies have seen the advantages of using generic names, such as B&Q (diy.com) and British Gas (house.com). Your company, too, can reap those benefits from a generic domain name."

Not "Puts you in the same league", but "Lets you use the same technique".

Sorry if it sounds picky, but I'm trying to help ...
