Well my day started shite with a few issues with VoIP and clients but it just got worse!

Just a warning :p thought I'd reg a few generic .org.uk's and punt to a few to companies with the .co.uk :D offering it to them as open to offers. No hard sell just off the cuff.

Well here's just 3 of them .................

  1. Your kind of people disgust me now piss off. Slams phone down
  2. That's a Trade Mark (clearly wasn't) and i'll take you on with Nominet and bring you down!!! ended in hugs though.
  3. After emailing a company a Call from a guy saying how dare I try and sell his domain to him. Sounded a serious guy and was told he could destroy me, my life, my company and family if I continued!! This actually turned into a very positive situ

So people be warned and on your guard :(

To be fair though GDG, you know how annoyed you get when someone cold calls you (at least I know I do)

So 2 out of 3 isnt bad.

Sorry about that, I didn't realise it was you :p

Nah, just kidding.

I was also cold called today from Nominet.. At around 3 o'clock this afternoon. He even had the cheek to say he was calling to hold my hand LOL

I think he said it was a new hand holding policy from nominet for new registrars. First you need to pass an exam, then they hold your hand. Very nice people at Nominet

I know we knock Nom from time to time around these parts but you can't fault their customer/registrar support. It's top notch imo.

Back to topic. To be honest I can see their point, sort of – think it would annoy me if someone reg'd the .org.uk equivalent of my .co.uk and then immediately tried to sell it to me. Let them find you, if they want it they will.

Well you live and learn, all it has done is push me into creating more sites instead of sitting on domains.

The guy that was going to destroy me and my life LOL has actually showed me a few neat things (best mate now)

Done a bit of digging on him and he's a very BIG player on line as a whole so yeah I picked the wrong/right guy as it turns out.

Three weeks ago I registered a nice sounding LLN.co.uk and after doing so, banged it in google. Turned out there was a London company trading under that name and they were using the .com, so I dropped them an email saying that how I picked it up and had no current plans for it and wondered if they wanted to buy it. I had no intentions of ripping them off, £20 for my troubles would have done, but they completely ignored me.

A google alert later told me one of them had posted my email address on twitter saying I was trying to hustle them and had an #idiot hashtag. Was only trying to do them a favour.

I love it when they get all Gangster on you.

I had one guy actualy contact me about buying a domain name. When I told him I wanted £xxx for it he went mental. He said he was going to come down for a "little chat" and get it off me. Does he think I carry my domain names around on a floppy disk or something?? :D

It was all very strange. He was emailing me really abusive emails.

The best part was when he sent an email to Nominet telling them I was a cybersquatter and he wanted the domain name transferred to him. The domain name was a .com :D I laughed so hard!

Anyway...... After a bit of google searching I found out his company was working out of some shared office space. I threatened to forward all his emails to the owner of this place to make them aware how one of their tenants was operating. He soon shut up!!!

Better option, inform the police, especially with email threats, there's a telecommunication law somewhere that says you can't threaten people like that. Bullys should get what they deserve!

I think I could deal with the idle threats, tweeting my email address with the word idiot next to it is detrimental to my business.

How did you word it? Did you say they could it for next for nothing / a low fixed price or did you invite them to make an offer...?

That happens now and again,i advertised on a4u (the dreaded domains for sale section) and the guy wrote a comment about knicking his content, and we had a slagging match for a couple of PM's and then we both mellowed and really got on and the guy was a major player in his field infact he owned all the forums in this field.

I didn't specify a low price or a fixed price, probably should of done, but I didn't ask them to make an offer.

This last week I registered LLN.co.uk, I saw it on a drop list, thought it sound good so registered it. I've nothing planned for the domain, I was just hoarding, so wondered if you'd be interested in buying it?

Maybe I should have said "do you want it". Either way, I don't think I deserved that and consider it unprofessional.

Well the main guy that was going to destroy me, I thought hey I'm getting older by the day lets turn this around into something positive! Held my hands up and joked about it and trying my luck. He then changed his tone and was really cool about it. Didn't help the fact one of his sites had been hacked that morning and was red misting.

He's sent me loads of tips and advice about how to improve my sites and SEO etc

All good stuff too, tons of it.

I don't think you should be cold calling people - your giving the uk domain industry a bad name, its clear from the responses people are pissed off with you - for all we know it could be down the fact your a shite salesman with no idea how to engage these people in a business discussion, I dread to think what emails you sent.. :D

That's it I don't usually cold call or send emails out about domains and my tactics are good!

I was unlucky to get 3 already pissed off people on the phone. :p

And i'm very sure 100's of muppets out there doing a great job of messy the domainers industry up who arn't even in business!
