This is a copy of the email that was sent out to clients:
Since we started accepting backorders years ago we used the common business model of the time - first come first served.
However most places now are auctioning bids on backorders and it has not become cost effective to stay on the model of a fixed fee. With an increase in demand for drops and the impending release of uk domains it is no longer feasible to operate the way we have been.
As such from now we are implementing a new backorder system where the domain will only be auctioned if caught and there are multiple requests. This differs slightly from some models in that you don't have to mess around bidding on the backorder until *after* it is caught. This now of course means that any domains in the drop cycle are available to be backordered by anyone.
The way it works:
- You place a backorder on the domain you are interested in.
- If it is not caught there is no charge.
- If it is caught and, you were the only person with a backorder, you are invoiced £35 via paypal and, once settled, the domain is released to whichever tag you want.
- If it is caught and, multiple people have backordered, there will be a short 3 day PRIVATE auction only between the people who placed the backorder.
How an auction works:
- The opening bid will be from the person who placed the first backorder. It will be at £35
- Anyone else who backordered the domain can bid in increments of at least £10
- If there is any bidding in the last 20 minutes, to prevent sniping, the auction is extended 20 minutes from the last bid time.
- Once the auction is over the person with the high bid will be invoiced that amount by paypal.
- When the invoice is settled the domain will be transferred (at our expense) to the account holder.
We hung onto the first come first served business model for as long as we could. However it has become apparent that this model is becoming obsolete and it's simply not worth the time and expense to provide the service the way it has been.
