Say I place a wanted ad.
I pitch it as broad as possible to get loads of offers.
I then email potential end users offering the names that I have been offered.
If I get a response I go back to the registrant and negotiate the purchase of the domain name.

I've had someone pitch me a domain they didn't own, via my business website, which had just been advertised on here as a fixed price offering.

Best to stick it in the me offers section for a few days to see if there is a better offer. I'd like quite a few if yours lol

Strangely, I was thinking the same not so long ago.

Plus those who do wanted's, and never reply to anyone. Probably just after ideas for FTR domains.

I have enough trouble selling my own let alone anyone else's ;-)

It's always easier to sell other's because there are more of them .

I know you are jesting but the point I am making is that a lot of wanted ads
are so cryptic that they are not simply looking for a specific domain name or domain type.
I may be barking up the wrong tree, I am just throwing it out there.

.. or alternatively

You place a 'wanted ad' on here because you want to see what else is in the marketplace / what price is being asked before pricing your domain to a potential buyer...

.. or just fannying about... which is what seems to happen on here a lot...

:)

As someone who has recently put up a wanted ad that has broad criteria, I can perhaps explain my own reasons.

Personally, I've never had a niche or specialised in any specific type of domain name. If you looked at the domains I have, those that I have sold and those that I have bought as a result of the wanted post, then you would see this.

I wanted to cast a wide net, as I know what I like when I see it. I used to see a lot of domains on AD that I liked at a decent price. I'm not seeing that as much on here these days (or perhaps at times when I've had spare money), so they must be lurking away in people's portfolios. It's only by asking, that you find these little nuggets.

If I was playing some sort of underhand game, then I would be out registering the hyphenated or .uk versions of the domains that people have sent me. However, I've gone back to a few people asking why they haven't regged these versions when they are asking mid £xxx for the .co.uk, when the .uk is still available. (That's not to say that it hasn't been tempting!)

EDIT - I've bought 8 domains as a result of my wanted ad and am still looking for more

I think this is overly paranoid.

Many, if not most wanted threads are going to end with no sale because the buyer was not offered the domain they wanted.

I've posted a few and bought a few domains from them. I can tell you you get bombarded with a LOT of irrelevant, terrible quality domains.

A lot of people completely ignore any criteria and a lot of people are delusional about value.

For every decent domain I saw there were at least 20 not worth reg fee.

If you replied to them all it would take all day.

This is a domain sales forum, it would be better to encourage more potential buyers to post rather than complain about them :)

I have to agree. I have received a great number of domains that I would not be able to sell at a profit, either because there is no market for it, or because the price quoted is too high.

Why would I pay £200 for a domain, that may only resell for £250?

I'd be better off registering 20 .co.uk &.uk domains that would sell for £50 each.

The domain you are offering has to be better than anything else that is currently available on here, on domainlore, on sedo, or somewhere else.

No doubt someone will now quote me back a reply I've made to a wanted ad with an unrealistic price! ;)
