Hi

I have quite a few domain names and I think it is about time I develop a few of them instead of parking them. Has anyone ever used anyone off sites such as getafreelancer.com to design a website for them. Most of the guys on there are from India and seem pretty cheap? worth a go? My main website idea is a kind of property rental site. I just need customers to be able to load there property details to the site themselves and give them a password and an account. Then use the database so users can search available properties.

thanks richie

Yes I have used it, not overly brilliant, although I did have one guy from the UK who bid and did a really good job.

For your project you don't need a freelancer, try Open-Realty | Open-Realty

Or search for "FSBO" "for sale by owner", that should do the trick for you.

All the best

I have used that and 2-3 (rentacoder/guru off the top of my head) some others as well.

The code is often cobbled from script packages, like Scriptalicious or JQuery code, which I could do myself. The html is often messy too, unclosed tags, no use of h1, h2, h3 etc tags

Saying that I have had some fantastic stuff out of the eastern block and india, if your very specific about what you want and how you want it. Specify you want validated code, full use of h1, h2, h3 etc tags, and be exacting.

Its also worth noting that if you post the same project for £50 and £3000, the same people will message you within the top of your budget, so if you put your max budget they will just goto that so you may wanna go in low and suggest your open to offers.

I have also used Elance.com for various types of projects and generally had good experiences.

I would second Skinner's comments about needing to specify exactly what you want for these types of resources to work well. I also found that you need to be a good tester as they generally don't seem strong on testing.

i used one from guru before,i used a guy from India to do the job because he was cheap as chips, but looking at his "fake" portfolio i was taken in,i don't think they have spell checkers over there and the site looked s**t,waste of money and time.i would ask on this site if anybody would like to take it on.

I would definitely make sure you have an understanding of what well formed html documents and valid, standards compliant code is before using these services.

The way your html documents are structured can have a huge effect on SEO, and for a website that's success will depend greatly on search rankings this is important.

I would always get a guarantee that the website will work on all modern browsers,(IE6, IE7, Firefox 2 and 3, safari e.t.c) and on OSX and Windows, and look good on all screen resolutions.

You get what you pay for and because most people who use these services don't have much of a clue what good code is,(if they did they would do it themselves) it's easy to end up with a site that might look ok but is not seo friendly,is bandwidth heavy and will break if the user upgrades their browser.
