I'm having a pit of trouble with a blog on one of my sites not being picked up and its doing my head in!:(

Whenever i've set up sites before I just post away, set up pinging and google snaps up the content but its just not happening on this one and I wondered if anyone could see anything wrong?

Its the: Tenerife Holidays Blog

The page itself has been indexed but so far non of the posts are, its been a week now which is slow for blog indexing - or at least I think it is?

I've tried submitting my sitemap to Google and its picked up most of the pages (127 of 150) but its not grabbed the blog posts.

I've tried linking to the blog from other sites, i've tried pinging, feedburner, i've tried adding the rss feed to rss directories and now i'm stuck!

Just a bit concerned that if its not indexed soon google may not see me as the original source.

God knows what i'm doing wrong.

Anyone got any ideas - i'd really appreciate some input it even if the answer is " just wait you impatient dickhead"! lol

Cheers loads

Russ

I've noticed lately when installing WP from fantastico, the default privacy setting is now block search engines. Sounds crazy but could be something that simple.
No idea why that would be the default setting, makes no sense.

Thanks for that top tip!
Just changed the privacy settings on site I set up yesterday ( it was set to block search engines ) will check all of the others now...

Cheers,

Malcolm

No worries, glad to help.
It only applies to fantastico installs, if you do a clean FTP install there is a checkbox for privacy during the install process.

That's a good idea; I noticed that too when setting up MySmoothies.co.uk and MyDigitalRadio.co.uk on a Fantastico WP install this week.

Took me a while to figure out! :D LOL.

Few ideas...

A site wont just get indexed because it's been built it does need to give search engines a hint it's there.

Yes with WordPress the privacy settings or a simple link back on another site thats cwawled regularly.

For Google use site:domainname.com as just searching domainname.com doesn't always work.

TBH I always set my WP installs to not be indexed until the site is at a rough stage complete so that Google etc doesn't index it half cooked.

Google likes half cooked sites, and when they next crawl your site they see it's almost cooked so they know it's a work in progress.

P.S.
I don't know if that's true, like all good SEO tips, I made it up as I went along :)

I mean half cooked as in Front page Title been "Home" and half complete content for pages.

I see what you mean by they may like half cooked but I see that as it's complete and your adding a news article or a new update. Not finishing off or correcting titles.

That's why I hold them back until a nice level of completeness.

Showing 154 pages indexed this morning. :D

The Google sitemaps generator plugin is a good bit of kit for Wordpress and very easy to use - and free.

I think the best way to keep your site at the first page of google, you need to refresh it everyday and don't let it be calm, and the most important one, you must take care where the content is your unique works.

Hi Russ,

Really liked the site great info etc well done...

The problem also is why would Google want to index the same text / content twice???

Text added to http://www.tenerifeholidays.co.uk/blog/

Then its duplicated on individual pages?

On another note, I would change the width of the Div for the footer-links... The terms and and conditions link on my screen it creeps down and a small chance it could be seen as hidden text (why take any risk?)

#footer-links {
float:right;
width: 500px;
text-align: right;
margin-right: 20px;
font-size: 10px;
color: #fff;
}

Also when you hover over the link "Durham graduates set to break rowing record" it could also be seen as hidden text (very small chance I know).

And always be careful what you link out to

Its my first reply to a guess here so I am going to stop here as I dont want to seen as flaming your great site, so incase im taken the wrong way im going to stop :)

good enough for me, I'm going to uncook some of my cooked sites and then re-cook them halfway

no if you re-cook them you might get food poisoning,remember once it's cooked it's cooked and no going back....
