solar-panels.co.uk is reported as having sold for £4000

It is a very high 'exact' google term but just shows that very good hyphenated domains can command very decent prices

I was just asking yesterday about the ratio of hyphenated to unhyphenated prices and the view was about 1:10 ratio.

Clearly, there are exceptions and the £4k sale above may be one of them.

Good question - In our opinion the value of the hyphenated version may depend on:

a) the availability of an alternative domain i.e. you are a leading solar panel manufacturer/supplier and want to develop an additional site but the .co.uk and .com unhyphenated domains have gone (or the prices are way above budget). Next best will be the hyphenated .co.uk for a uk company. £4000 may not be that much compared to the cost of development and the return that a decently ranked website will provide in the years to come.

b) whether the hyphenated domain looks better. i.e. some words definitely look better hyphenated i.e. clearallloans or clear-all-loans - in some cases companies own both versions but use the hyphenated as it is less confusing.

c) The 1:10 ratio you've given might be a pretty good indicator but I'm sure it can swing up and down a bit. It's not hard to get £500 for a decent hyphenated domain but the unhyphenated might not always be worth 10 times the amount. So I would think that it could range from 1:5 to 1:15 depending on the situation and demand.

d) With poorer keyword domains it might be hard to get any decent price i.e. if the unhyphenated version might sell for only £500 then the hyphenated might be hard to sell at all.

Just a few ideas from our own experience - some of you might have other opinions and experiences to share.

I have only recently started my scripts searching for hyphenated domains, and I was realy suprised on how may of these had gone, its great uk domain sale in this area, hopefully it also helps bring more focus to this is area in terms of value

I bought panels solar.co.uk last year ....I think i have learnt enough since then to realise that it was not worth much - although sedo valued it at £2000!!!

They do free ones now...obviously done by a computer and not very accurate by all accounts

I think part of the reason is that it may be using the Google keyword external tool which tends to mix up the order of words.
