For anyone who feels they missed out:

aftershaveforwomen.co.uk is free to reg :p

How did this site manage to rank no. 1 with so little content and competing against almost 1.4m other websites? Is it just down to the domain containing the keywords?

With a generic you can have a single page with just an image on it, when you take in the fact that the domain matches the search term and pack the site with relevant keywords and a decent title and description and you can get ranked easy.

Generics are a powerful marketing tool

In this case, a number one ranking is purely academic anyway. I don't know anyone who would actually search for "aftershave for men" no more than you would search for "shoes for feet".

If it ranked for aftershave I'd sit up and take notice.

Yes, good point, I haven't checked GKT but I know people search for stuff like baby cots a few thousand times which is similar.

Let's hope it makes money for him

Edit > I was under the impression that you had bought it, obviously not.

I guess it doesn't matter if the phrase is correct or not; if your site ranks no.1 for a term that is search for 12,000 times a month, it must be worth something, especially to affiliate marketers.

BTW diablo, your entrepreneur.co.uk site is directing to another site. Just thought I'd let you know just in case you didn't.

That's global exacts and not UK but that said, I don't know what Diablos' requirements are but 5k UK exacts for 10 months a year and 20k in november and 25k in December is pretty good in my eyes, especially when you consider that the high exacts in November and December are related to xmas therefore should be a higher conversion rate compared to normal months.

I'm using the new Google KWT which shows 12,100 UK exacts. I'm guessing the new one is more accurate...

Yes fair enough, it is better, I use the old interface because you can select to get results without additional ideas, I don't know how to do that on the new one

Yeah, I prefer the old interface as well because all the options are above the fold. To just show results for the keywords you typed in in the new interface, click on the radio button next to 'ideas containing my search terms' under 'show results for', which appears when you click 'additional options'

Thanks Johnny Boy - not quite sure why that was happening, but now fixed. I realy appreciate you pointing that out.

As we all know 5k exact searches doesn't mean anything like 5k visitors and then only a small percentage of those visitors will convert. So grabbing these stats from Google can be very misleading.

That wasn't really my point though. Ranking for long tail searches is very easy - irrespective of the keywords in a domain name. If it ranked for aftershave I would be impressed.

All that said, good luck to the new owner. I'm sure they will see a return on their investment. The name just made me smile. As does cheapsmells.co.uk but that seems to be very successful.

I was interested in this site, but was sold before I had the chance.

Seeing as the site is ranked number 1 and is an 18 month old domain name, but was sold for only £65, answers the question on the search tool to a degree.

I wish the new owner good luck with the site, and obviously could see something else in the ranking / site (like I did), than the original owner did :)

Cheapsmells does sound a bit naf, I remember trying to sell smelling#co#uk to fragrance businesses and getting only a few replies, all laughing at it
