Aff banners onto other sites ?

I was wondering, If i pay a web master to advertise on their site, can i use one of my affiliate banners ?
I imagine it would work, as in i would still get paid through the link as my account user name/code would be in the html code for the banner ?
Is this against any rules ?
Should i inform my affiliate agent of my intentions ?
NB* The merchant i wish to promote uses auto approval and as no restrictions.
