I'd like to discuss the following ideas if anyone is interested. Not saying they are good though.
When selling a domain, I believe the idea is to create targeted traffic to a the domain. Targeted traffic in this context meaning people who might be interested in buying that domain. At the same time, convincing those potential buyers that a domain has a value.
With this in mind. If the domain is reasonably good/niche to begin with, and has type in traffic, offering reciprocal links and creating a controlled links page might be beneficial.
The benefit of this could be:
1. Potential buyers want a link, and one can get contact details from them. They might buy later on.
2. The more inbound targeted links, the higher the profile within the industry of the domain. Possibly a higher page rank, and possibly a higher price later on.
3. If there are several competitors wanting/having links, it is in their interest to monitor the progress of this site.
If the site increases in traffic, perhaps adding a forum will attract further potential buyers.
Registering the site with Affiliate Program Schemes will also tell the right people that the domain exists.
I have, as an example, a lot of Nanotechnology names for sale: http://www.names4sale.co.uk/domains/nano.htm If I cultured a Nanotechnology links page and forum, I might attract more and more suitable buyers.
Downside: You might not be able to promote the Domain/Site as being for sale initially, but you could always use a similar domain to start with. But by growing the community around a domain, in a generic way, it might add value and attract the right buyer. No doubt a lot more downsides, as said, I’d be interested in knowing if anyone has similar ideas in action. I suppose it’s basically the same as selling a site, as opposed to selling a domain.
Thanks,
Names4sale
