Dear Admin,

can we have a chat room please,

I think it would be good (i volunteer as moderator ;) )

seriously, I think it would bring our community alive..

MIRC channel would be the best option on this as was talking about this earlier to someone.

Having a java script in built chat would reasonably be pointless.

MIRC would give the options of having bot moderators that can greet and boot memebers out based on certain words.

Also a MIRC room would mean that passing trade would visit the forums.

Good suggestion though as it means I get to take the piss more and keep it off the forums ;)

I have looked at this before but the bandwidth usage got me banned (and then re-instated when I took it off). I don't know mIRC chat, how do i set it up and what kind of hosting do I need?

You dont need to worry about hosting for mirc

you can download from www.mirc.com

Setting up a room is very easy but having it permant you need to have something sorted for you.

I havent done anything with MIRC for years but years ago you used to have to have a certain amount of people wanting that room and then apply to the MIRC hosts so for example

it would be acorndomains.speeddemon@mirc or something like that

Once you have a certain amount of people backing you then it would be a permant room.

You could assign moderators than have the power to boot someone out of the room etc, but when I was a mod we spent so much time kicking each other out of the room we didnt worry about anyone else and that was about 5 years or more now.

You can also have the bots in the room that welcome people to the room and also post up greetings every so often, depends on when you set them to go off.

They can have filters to make them talk as well, so if someone swears you can have the bot say wash your mouth out with soap.

It would be good fun but you deffinatly dont want a web based java script chat room as thats slow and increases your bandwidth.

I think what Mark is saying is that you should set up and IRC channel on one of the big IRC Servers like Freenode, quakenet, ircnet etc. This can be very tedious for those of us who have no idea how to work an IRC server though!

I can barely use one, its so confusing!

I use ChatZilla add-on for Firefox.

Do you really think there will be enough people to support the chat room idea anyway?

I look at the big US boards and often they only have a few people there.

I think it would be busy to start with but Id have to have more moderators to watch that 24x7 as well.

How many people can your conference on MSN / Skype?

We could set up dates times and hook up other ways so we can actually chat / talk.

Let's get a few ideas going.....I am happy to support anything that makes sense / doesn't cost me too much in hosting fees.

MIRC is just a program that connects to the IRC without going to confusing but is one of the best programs or used to be to connect to the chat rooms.

There are other alternatives available.

All what you need to do for MIRC is simply name, password and you can have a starting chat room that you go into.

By default this is usually one of the unversal help rooms, but you can set this up.

Theres probaly people here that know more about recent IRC channels etc that can help, I can download it boot it up and find rooms etc but it might have all change since I was a lad.

One good thing about IRC as well if you have the right software installed you can sit in the room and you can have it say advertise a file to download that if someone is selling domains then you can download that file to look thru.

Its a big World but an exciting one

It would probably be better just to conference on MSN, Yahoo, or whatever Instant Messenger people use nowadays. No Bandwidth, no fuss, just add yourself to a mailing list type thing.

Im surprised that we dont already have a mailing list.

We could have a snopsis on the weeks events, any large domain sales, Nominet cock ups, Parking info. Either created and sent via Admin or lots of emails flying backwards and forewards between members.

Mailing lists, oh please no. I get enough spam as it is without getting more emails.

Whereas I dont get any Spam and would like to be able to be alerted to *decent* domains for sales/outages/important news without having to log onto to the board and whilst im out and about on the PDA
