Is there an optimum number of links you should put on your signature or is there a limit?

its hard to judge as it depend on screen resolution - at the moment admin yours is looking like 4 lines to me :) - perhaps character would be better - also easier to implement - left(sig, 30)

admin is admin... s/he could have war and peace as his sig ;)

Two lines seems about right, and if you have more then perhaps either trim it or just not bang it on every post. Sigs are signatures not 'get free inbound link space' ;)

problem is if your on 800x600 2 lines aint a lot - if your on 1920 x 1200 war and peace fits on 2 lines?

Come on Rob, Sigs are useful for 'free' inbound links, and a nice perk of posting on the (any) forum.

Not sure how many lines mine is! Not many although i do have a few links in there!

Sig length psychology:

0 - 2 lines = Domain Pro
3 = Semi-Pro
4 = Amateur
5+ = Boy Racer...

LOL

I've always wondered: are they picked up by search engine bots? And do they help with link popularity weighting?

Looking at Lex's signature I would say that's pretty accurate :)

Some forums add no follow tags to the sigs, most don't though.

Yes they are picked up by bots, and yes the anchor text does carry weight.

Try it yourself with an uncompetetive keyphrase related to one of your sites (that you don't currently rank well for) and you should see the results.

I say try it with an uncompetetive keyphrase as you'll see the results quicker, but it does work equally well for competetive keyphrases but obviously there are alot more factors to consider aswell then.
