I am currently building a database of .uk domains soley for my own use and not to sell or lend out.

I currently have 2,000,000

I am using various spiders etc

Does any one have any useful advice on how to get the remaining 5,000,000

Or want to get involved in the project

Sarah

Do you mean you have actually registered 2 million and want to register another 5 million? Or that you just want a list of 5 million domains?

If it's the latter, I would probably suggest you start with a list of dictionary words, list of UK towns, counties and business names (you can buy a DB of companies, just search for 'direct mailing lists' on Google), then write a script to run them through the whois over a number of days to see which ones actually exist (you'll need a Nominet Handle for this kind of bulk querying).

Out of interest... why do you need a list of 5 million .co.uk domains?

No, she want's a complete list of all UK domains currently registered.. Something that no-one is going to hand out for free unless/until nominet release zone files.

2.7 million are in the public domain. Do you have notion that you will get help here?

You have to have technical skills to build what you want. However, according to Nominet's current rules you are not allowed to do it,

Does those rules only apply to members/DAC access, but not whois?
It applies to anyone who has used any of the following:

1. whois
2. whois2
3. DAC

If you have a different interpretation, I'm 'all ears'.

If you know Unix, there's a way to buiid this alternatively, but the data retention and dissemination 'rules' apply; although they are completely insane and inept.

Sufficiently creative and original databases are automatically protected by copyright, but there are many others that are not covered by copyright law, including telephone directories.

Under the Communications Act 2003, OFCOM has certain functions relating to telephone numbers. But under statutory instrument 2003 number 3281 'Telephone Number Exclusion' Order 2003, internet domain names, internet addresses or addresses/identifiers that incorporate internet domain names/addresses, including email addresses, are excluded from treatment as telephone numbers for the purposes of the relevant parts of the Communications Act 2003. It is a key instrument which forms a demarcation line that the principle players abide by.

If anyone can produce a Nominet document where they themselves consider a domain name as similar to a telephone number, put your hands up!

Alternatively, allow Ofcom involvement as hinted at in the Digital Britain report, and lobby for change there.

Can someone give me a link to the T&C's or quote the bit that covers this? I can't see anything.
