Here we go again with 123-reg and domain renewals:

I've run the site GowerLive.co.uk with my mate Greg for 8 years as of yesterday (so it's a keeper and not a domain i'd let lapse). This morning I get the email from Nominet telling me the domain GowerLive.co.uk needs to be renewed:

08-Oct-2012

Your gowerlive.co.uk domain name is due for renewal.

hmmm...123-reg should have renewed that and they also confirmed in their email on 4th October that this domain was set to autorenew and they'd attempt payment on the 7th October

Dear Lee

This e-mail contains important information regarding your domain name(s) that are registered with 123-reg.co.uk

These domains are set to auto-renew and payment for renewal will be attempted 7 days in advance of the expiration date.

The following domains will expire in 3 days on 07 October 2012

gowerlive.co.uk

At any time prior to 07 October 2012 you can login to your 123-reg control panel and renew the domain yourself manually by selecting 'Renew Domains' within the 'Domains' section.

If you cannot remember your control panel password, please click here.

We will attempt to renew your domain names for you automatically on 07 October 2012, using the payment methods stored on your account, for a period matching that of the original registration. For example, if you previously bought or renewed your domain name for two years, we'll renew it for a further two years.

As yet I've not had an email from 123-reg to say it's been renewed, not renewed, the payment failed...no update regarding this domain at all.

This is what it says inside my 123-reg Control panel

This is the current whois for the domain:

Being a savvy domainer, i make sure my account with Nominet is in tip top condition for the above exact reason...what about average Joe who's never heard of Nominet? How is he going to know his prized domains not been renewed? I'm going to leave the domain as it is for a few days and see what happens...

@Nominet...?

Lee

...update

...it was renewed today at 16:02, whether that was automated or 123-reg pushed it through after reading this thread we'll never know.

Just keep your eye on those 123-reg managed domains!

Lee

Hello,

As of the 1st of October we had a change to our domain name renewal policy and from this date all domain name renewals are going to made 7 days earlier. This policy change has been put in place to help reduce the risk of domain names entering redemption or going offline due to payment issues. Once the payment has been collected the domain names will be renewed, except for cases where the registry rules prevent us from renewing at the time payment is taken. This will only effect a small number of domain name extensions and the extensions which are effected tend to be less widely used. These domain names will be renewed at the earliest available opportunity and will of course renew by the expiration date.

With regards to your renewal I can confirm that we did renew the domain name on the day we took the payment. The payment was taken a day later than we expected to, as during the transition between the old and new policy a backlog has built up, which we are currently clearing. You can be assured that this backlog is being cleared and all domain names will renew and there will not be any downtime caused by this.

Regards,

Nerys

You shouldn't trust ANY registrar to renew your domains, I keep a list of mine in a file I scan for renewals, owner changes and NS changes once a week or so. It can just run in the background so it's no effort but let's me see what's coming up for renewal so gives me time to think do I want to keep it.

If I do a renewal, I scan that domain until I see the WHOIS update.

Hope it doesn't seem like advertising - I think you ought to check out Daily. I highly recommend them and also their renewals are done in real-time :)
